BSG handrail standards are manufactured from tube or solid bar as follows.
Standards are manufactured with one, two or several balls. Ball centres "Y" are generally 550 mm for platform type and 450 mm for raked type but these are flexible to suit customers requirements or any applicable regulations.

TUBULAR STANDARDS

Manufactured from tube, 33.7 mm diameter, 42.4 mm and 48.3 mm diameter. Ball sizes differ to suit the size of handrailing passing through.
63 mm diameter balls to suit 33.7 mm diameter handrailing.
82 mm diameter balls to suit 33.7 mm, 42.4 mm and 48.3 mm diameter handrailing.

SOLID WELDED STANDARDS

Manufactured from 32mm diameter and 38 mm solid bar. Ball sizes differ to suit the hand railing passing through. 60 mm diameter balls to suit 33.7 mm diameter handrailing. 70 mm diameter balls to suit 33.7 mm and 42.4 mm diameter handrailing.

The table below sets out the maximum recommended dimension between Handrail Standards to achieve the three categories of load shown.These are based upon design height as detailed to the centre line of the handrailing using deflection to BS 6180 and strength to Eurocodes 0, 1 & 3.

Standard bases are 150mm x 65mm and 200mm x 65mm for raking flat. The figures shown in red use a 15mm thick base plate whilst others are based upon 12mm thick. Design height is measured from the top of the top rail to the pivot point of the fixing. The above bay sizes assume that the structure to which the handrail standard is attached can take the imposed loading and that the correct fixings are used.

BASE TYPES

Standard base details are as below:-

Rectangular bases are generally 12 mm or 15 mm thick with 18 mm diameter holes.
Standard offset = base plate thickness + 1/2 diameter of the shank.
Special bases can be manufactured to customers requirements.
